NOVEMBER 14, 2024 - ATLANTA - The boys' and girls' winners of the Wingfoot XC Classic presented by Publix, a brother-and-sister duo and a trio of freshman are among the 42 high school athletes from eight counties honored by Atlanta Track Club as members of its 2024 All-Metro Cross Country Team, the Club announced today. Voting for Runner of the Year is open here until Monday, November 18, at 11:59 p.m.
Held annually since 1964, the All-Metro awards are Atlanta Track Club's oldest tradition, with almost 6,000 boys and girls honored since the Club's founding that year.
"As the Club celebrates its 60th anniversary, we're proud to look back and say that our first event was one at which we honored high school athletes," said Rich Kenah, CEO. "Every year, we find ourselves more excited and encouraged by the depth of talent and dedication we see in Georgia's young runners, and this year is no exception."
Leading the roster are Tommy Latham (Marist School) and Averi Lowen (Bowdon HS), each ranked #1 in Georgia at 5K. Latham, a senior who won the 4A state title last weekend after breaking the tape at the Wingfoot XC Classic early this season, earned his fourth-consecutive All-Metro Cross Country nomination - only the third boy ever to do so. Lowen, a sophomore, won the 1A, Division 2 title on the Carrollton state-meet course by an eye-popping margin of more than 3:20, and her winning time of 17:52.46 was the fastest in any division.
They are joined by 2024 Georgia state champions Malachi Burnett (Creekview HS junior, 5A), Regina Michel Camacho (Northview HS senior, 4A), Haris Flynn (The Mount Vernon School junior, 1A-3A Private), Jackson Hogsed (Lambert HS senior, 6A), Josie Hutchinson (Pope HS junior, 5A) and Mary Nesmith (Marietta HS junior, 6A).
Among the other athletes named to the All-Metro team are senior Zahara Bernal (Pace Academy), a three-time All-Metro in cross country and winner of the 2024 Wingfoot XC Classic, and siblings Riley Comstock (Harrison HS sophomore) and Paige Comstock (Harrison HS freshman).
A full list of honorees can be found below. Runners were selected on the basis of their performances at the state meet, major invitationals and in head-to-head competitions.
The All-Metro athletes will be recognized at an invitation-only gathering in Midtown Atlanta on December 10, where the first, second and third teams will be revealed. The evening will culminate with a male and female athlete being named Runner of the Year.
