ATLANTA - June 5, 2024 - Marking its 60th anniversary of
celebrating high school athletes, Atlanta Track Club tonight honored its 2024
All-Metro Track and Field Team at a ceremony in which four competitors - who
among them won eight state titles and set three state records this season -
were named its top athletes of the year.
"There is nothing more treasured at Atlanta Track Club than its
All-Metro tradition," said Rich Kenah, CEO. "The Club's commitment to youth
goes back to its roots and comes from the heart in a way that makes us proud -
as do the 55 athletes who are being honored tonight. You are champions all."
The Girls' Track Athlete of the Year is Jasmine Robinson,
who will be a junior at North Cobb High School. Robinson is the GHSA 7A state
champion in the 200 meters and the 300-meter hurdles, in which she set a state
record of 39.89 - a time not only ranked #1 in the country this year, but the
second-fastest in history behind only Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, now an Olympic
gold medalist. The versatile Robinson was also 7A runner-up in the 100-meter
hurdles and 7th in the long jump.
After twice being named Boys' XC Runner of the Year, Tommy
Latham adds Boys' Track Athlete of the Year to his list of accolades after
a phenomenal season that included the fastest 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters and
4x1,600m relay in Georgia high school history. Latham set the 1,600m mark of
4:01.66 in winning the state title, breaking the 25-year-old state record in
the process, and the 3,200m of 8:46.88 earlier in the season before winning the
6A title at that distance, as well.
Named Girls' Field Athlete of the Year is Ava Kitchings,
the GHSA 5A state champion in the long jump. The rising junior at Greater
Atlanta Christian School also has the longest jump in Georgia this year and
sixth-longest in state history at 20-6.
Boys' Field Athlete of the Year honors go to Luke Stradley,
a rising senior at Etowah High School in Woodstock. The GHSA 6A state champion
in both the high jump and long jump. In the high jump, Stradley's mark of 7-0
to win the state title is #2 for the year in Georgia; his 25-3 leap in the long
jump is #1 for 2024 in Georgia (tied for #4 all-time) and #2 in the U.S. He
also finished as 6A state runner-up in the triple jump.
Also tonight, in collaboration with the Atlanta Youth Running
Foundation, the Atlanta Track Club Foundation awarded two $10,000 scholarships
to graduating senior athletes for their contributions in the sport and in the
classroom. Winning the Patty Foell Scholarship is Sydney Nettles, a
hurdler from Campbell High School in Smyrna who will attend Rutgers University,
and winning the Hawthorne Wesley Scholarship is Teddy Meredith, a
distance runner from North Atlanta High School. He will be attending Washington
and Lee University.
Held annually since 1964, the All-Metro ceremonies for track and
field and cross country are Atlanta Track Club's longest-running event. This
season's honorees are included below.
